The establishment of the Academy is a testament to His
Majesty The King’s recognition of the critical role of education in enriching
the lives of our people and society; nurturing successive generations of
leaders; narrowing emerging economic and social disparities and building a strong,
secure and prosperous nation. The Royal Academy will strengthen and streamline
His Majesty’s Kidu initiatives in education.
The Royal Academy is slated to commence classes from the
academic year 2016. In pursuance of this, there is currently a Teacher
Development Program (TDP) underway at the academy’s project office in Dop
Shari, Paro. The TDP commenced on October 1, 2014 and is an academically
challenging and rigorous program to groom the first cohort of teachers that
will be spearheading the academy.
Three teacher educators and numerous external resource
persons support the 12 teachers who are part of the program. For each of the
strands, the teachers have to carry an assignment at the end of the term
followed by a presentation of their learnings in that particular disciplinary
area.
Some of the major highlights of the first term were the
school observation study and the shadowing of students at various schools in
and around Paro town. In addition to this, we were introduced to the various
educational philosophers and their concepts, from around the world. We were
also exposed to the technological aspects that are currently revolutionizing
how teaching and learning takes place across the world’s classrooms.
The term concluded on December 22, 2014 for the winter
break.
